Desirée Lama, a newly minted PhD graduate, reflects upon her journey as a graduate student while navigating the transition to career planning and employment. During this transition and the accompanying nerves, Desirée embraces the uncertainty of this new chapter.

From the moment Desirée began her undergraduate studies at UT Austin, she believed she needed a strict plan for life. However, over the years and throughout her graduate education, she recognized the value of flexibility and change. This shift was especially meaningful for Desirée because it relieved the pressure of having everything figured out.

Advice For Students Navigating Career Planning

Lesson 1: Managing Expectations and Obstacles

The transition from college to career brings a shift in mindset and priorities that can be both daunting and exciting. During this time, it can be easy to overlook professional and personal expectations. Recognizing that professional journeys unfold at different paces is essential while entering post-grad life.

While students are often encouraged to have a clear plan after commencement, as of March 2026, data show that about 5.6% of college graduates are unemployed and 41.5% are underemployed (Federal Reserve Bank of New York, n.d.). While the current job market can be discouraging, maintaining realistic expectations and staying adaptable can help graduates navigate uncertainty with confidence.

Lesson 2: You Are Not Alone

While this season in your life may feel heavy and overwhelming, remember that you don’t have to navigate the uncertainty alone. Many college graduates feel unsure about what is next, but don’t be afraid to ask for help from your support network.

Rely on the tools and resources that are readily available to assist you in your job search, such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Grammarly ATS Checker, Alumni Networks, and much more. These resources not only provide practical guidance but can also open doors to opportunities that may not be accessible through online applications alone.

Grant yourself permission to redefine your personal and professional identity as you shift from student to professional. Above all, remember to be patient with yourself. This phase in your life is about exploration, building new routines, and growth.

Embracing change and exploring new potential career passions can open doors you never thought possible. There isn’t a single storyline you have to adhere to during your transition into career planning and employment. Your future is your own, and you have the power to design the path ahead.
